Paraná is a quiet town on the opposite bank of the river from it’s bigger brother, Santa Fe. Although smaller in size than Santa Fe, it is argurably a more pleasant place. Urquiza Park and the boardwalk along the river are great places to spend a lazy afternoon soaking in the sun.

The Paraná airport (PRA) is located 7.5 kms to the south east of the center. At the time of this writing, only charter flights were flying to and from Parana.

Parque Nuevo ,a 100 hectare forested park northwest of the city is a good place for a short hike. Climb to the highest point on the trail and you will get a great view of the river.

Gualeguaychú is best known as the site of the biggest Carnival celebration in Argentina. But outside of carnival, when the city fills up and hotel prices go through the ceiling, it is a quaint quiet little town along the Uruguay river. There is a very pleasant park just on the edge of town where you can stroll and feed the ducks.

Oddly enough, there are not a lot of hotels in town. We suppose that the burst of tourism during carnival can’t justify there existence the rest of the year.

Resistencia is the capital of the sparsely populated province of Chaco. In recent times the boom of soybean prices has favored the economy of the city and province alike. The city also is known for its sculptures, 450 of which are publicly displayed outdoors.

Resistencia makes an excellent base for exploring nearby Chaco National Park and the Isla del Cerrito.

Every spring a fishing tournament, Torneo Internacional de Pesca del Dorado, is held in Resistencia.

A city thats just big enough to be interesting but small enough to be friendly and relaxing. It certainly owes it history to its position on the confluence of the Paran&aacute and Paraguay rivers. As far as architecture goes it does have some interesting buildings, but the real draw to this city is its fish. Fisherman come here from all over the world in search of Dorado.

Summer days can be very hot and sticky here, and the locals take their siesta seriously.

If you are not into fishing then a stroll down the riverside might be a good option. At night the General Belgrano Bridge to Resistencia is beautifully lit up. There are also a couple of good museums in town. The fine arts museum, Bellas Artes and the Natural Sciences museum.

Carnival is a celebrated hard during the entire month of February in Corrientes.

Known primarily for being a base to explore the nearby falls, Puerto Iguazú is also a border town to cross into Brazil, and then eventually Paraguay. If you are planning on visiting Argentina and Brazil, there is no reason you should miss the falls.

The airport Cataratas del Iguazu (IGR) is located 25kms from the center.

For destinations in Brazil it is better to cross the border and take a local flight from Foz do Iguaçu International Airport (IGU).

It is possible to take a train from Buenos Aires to near Posadas, but it is only recommended for railroad buffs or those on a very strict budget. This train is habitually delayed. For more information on the train, see the page on Posadas.

The bus terminal in puerto Iguazú (tel. (03757) 422722) is located on Av. Córdoba and Av. Misiones. Buses to Buenos Aires (18 hours) and Salta daily. Services to many other destinations as well. If you can’t find a bus to your destination or they are all full, you can always take a bus to Posadas where there are more options.

It goes without saying that a visit to the falls is essential. They are located 18kms from the center.

The Itaipú dam is a mammoth that is worth visiting.

A quiet town that makes a good place to cross the border into Uruguay or break up a long bus ride between Iguazú and Buenos Aires. The city also has some great architecture, such as the Arruabarrena house.

Crossing to Salto, Uruguay

Note that you are not allowed to cross the international bridge on foot, but it is generally easy enough to hitch a ride. On Sunday there is no public transportation in Salto.

El Palmar National Park is located 60kms to the south of the city.

The hot springs of Aguas Termales Vertiente de La Concordia are located 10kms north of the city off of the road to Federación (map). There are six pools with temperatures between 36 º and 44 º C and a large pool. All the ammenitites including: rental lockers, robes, towels, chairs and lounge chairs

Located only a few hours north of Buenos Aires, Rosario is an excellent destination for a weekend trip away from the capital, or a stopover if you are on your way to destinations north. Birthplace to Che Guevara, Lionel Messi and the Argentine flag, this port on the rio Paraná is the second largest city in the republic. It is also a university town, and the nightlife attests to it. Prices here are also much lower than in Buenos Aires.

Climate

Further north than Buenos Aires means the temperatures are milder in the winter but can get a bit stickier in the summer.
