Introduction to Mar Del Plata

The beaches in Mar Del Plata are very popular in January
The grandaddy of beach resorts in Argentina, Mar Del Plata hibernates in the winter but begins to stir in October. Things really get going in November when its film festival kicks off. And come January it seems like every Argentine has rounded up the family and headed towards the beach.
While that may be enough to turn off many travelers, there are a lot of fun events during this period. Many bands give free concerts on the beach and the nightclubs rock until the sun comes up. And while prices do go up, it’s hardly the gouging you would get in say Cancun or the coast of Spain. The tourism here is Argentine, so you don’t have to worry about “gringo prices”.
On new years day, 2012 the city will be the host for the symbolic start of the Dakar Rally.
